10 Celebrity Singers Who Made it as Actors

Ok, so we all know that in an ideal world we would love to be actors, singers, dancers – the whole package, as it were. But most of the time we tend to find that life just isn’t that kind and we’re not all naturally gifted in all areas. However, there are some lucky few celebrities who end up bridging the gap between the arts quite successfully. Jealous much? That’s ok, it’s a perfectly natural response.

1. Justin Timberlake.

One of the most famous singing to acting transitions, Justin Timberlake has managed to knock out some pretty impressive credits in films such as The Social Network, Alpha Dog and Friends with Benefits. Then there are also some not so impressive such as Bad Teacher alongside ex Cameron Diaz, but we won’t speak too much about that.

2. Beyoncé Knowles.

Yes it appears that the magical Bey really can do everything. This was proved in no uncertain terms when she took on the role of Deena Jones in hit 2006 movie Dreamgirls. There is no denying that her performance deserved a lot of praise but it cant have hurt that the role involved a hell of a lot of singing…

3. Will Smith.

This is somewhat of a “what came first: the chicken or the egg?” situation, mainly because Will Smith actually rapped on the world famous titles to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, so who knows whether we were supposed to call him a singer or an actor first? However, it certainly can’t be denied that after releasing hit singles such as ‘Miami’ and ‘Getting’ Jiggy Wit It’, Will Smith’s movie career went on to skyrocket, so in my opinion he still deserves a firm place on this list.

4. Jennifer Lopez.

J-Lo’s singing-come-acting career is another slightly confusing path because, although she was technically an actress first, she only actually started to make higher grossing films after she became successful as a singer.

5. Eminem.

Who can forget how much the world was talking about Eminem’s hit film 8 Mile when it came out back in 2002? The guy certainly proved he can act but also it can’t have really hurt that he was basically playing himself.

6. Jennifer Hudson.

The voice of an angel, and acting skills not far short of perfection, we must all bow in the presence of Jennifer Hudson who, was not only found on reality show American Idol, but also went on to win an Oscar for her performance in hit film Dreamgirls alongside Beyoncé.

7. 50 Cent.

I defy anyone not to have heard of 50 Cent’s first foray into acting in the notorious Get Rich or Die Tryin’ back in 2005. That was, uh, interesting but nonetheless he is now starring in very credible films such as 2015’s Southpaw which is highly tipped for success and stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams. You go, Fiddy.

8. Zooey Deschanel.

Don’t you just love Zooey Deschanel? Epitomising everything that we love in a comedy actress in her hit show New Girl, it is actually lesser known that she first hit the celebrity scene as part of indie pop duo ‘She & Him’.

9. Mark Wahlberg.

It’s very easy to forget how big a star Mark Wahlberg was in the music world in the 90s in comparison to the stratospheric success of his acting career now but those who were alive then will certainly be able to testify that ‘Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch’ were one of the coolest pop acts of the era.

10. Madonna.

Madonna’s acting pursuits are definitely something of a mixed bag when it comes to critics’ opinions. That being said, she definitely has some successes under her belt – albeit from a long time ago – such as Evita (1996) and A League of Their Own (1992).
