It’s impossible not to love a country who seem so healthy and carefree, yet have also invented some of the most sumptuous carbohydrate delicacies on the planet. I’m talking pizza, I’m talking pasta, and that is only just for starters (not even going in to their endless variety of wine, antipasti and desserts). The world has a great deal to thank Italy for and we must never forget it.

There aren’t many people you come across these days who don’t love the taste of a big juicy burger. Even the vegetarians out there have options they can’t live without and this, along with many other smokehouse specials, is something we must tip our hats to America for. That’s not even going in to the thousands upon thousands of sweet foods such as donuts, muffins and candy that they’re responsible for. America, we love you.

6. Mexican

The Mexicans unquestionably know how to do food and like many of the other countries on this list, their variation of offerings is seemingly endless. Whether you are a fan of the burrito (a tortilla wrap stuffed with meat, rice, guacamole, salsa and all the trimmings), sizzling fajitas, or even the inimitable fish taco, you will never be short of choices originating from this country to fall in love with.

7. French

Whilst there are some of you who might immediately think of the stranger contributions that France has made to the world of food, such as snails and frog legs, my own personal association with them begins and ends with bread. I don’t think there is any other country in the world that can quite compete with a freshly cooked croissant or baguette and I say that firm in the knowledge that I have done a lot of legwork to find out.

8. Spanish

Another country that clings tightly to culinary tradition is Spain, with its deliciously flavoursome signature dishes, such as paella and tapas. Speaking of tapas, what better meal option is there than to keep on ordering smaller dishes until you’re full? It seems like something we should all consider in my opinion.

9. Indian

There was no way that Indian food wasn’t going to find its way on to this list and unless you are one of the very few people in the world who doesn’t like curry, everyone tends to know their favourite choice from an Indian takeaway menu, be it a milder korma, a traditional tikka masala or a red hot vindaloo.

10. Thai

Bringing a slightly lighter – and some would say more sophisticated – take on Asiatic cuisine, the Thai people have certainly developed an aromatic genre of food the world can no longer live without. And for those of you out there who haven’t tried an authentic green or red thai curry, I can seriously say you haven’t lived.
